Simon Bennison

Is a lighting designer based in London working across ballet, dance, opera and theatre productions.

Interested in all collaborations for performance as well as lighting opportunities for art installation, light behaviour in buildings, sculpture, glass art and film projects. 

The portfolio gallery will include images from selected pieces with small information notes.

Scenes from an Execution (Dundee Repertory Theatre) and In a Minor Key, were both nominated for lighting design awards in Scotland and Russia, and Before the Tempest … After the Storm, (Cathy Marston), was filmed and broadcast for the BBC.

He is a Lighting Manager for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and the co-author of, “The Handbook of Stage Lighting”, with Neil Fraser.

Recent Works

Recent lighting for Ballet & Dance includes the full length ballets Ondine (Bolshoi Ballet) and Romeo & Julia (Royal Ballet of Flanders & Ekaterinburg Ballet). And one act pieces for the Headspace Dance Company Programmes: If Play is Play and Three & Four Quarters working with choreographers Didy Veldman, Mats Ek, Javier de Frutos, Luca Silvestrini and Matthew Dunster. And recently for the Royal Ballet; Elizabeth, Ballo della Regina, Ravengirl, See Even Night Herself is Here and Carousel Pas de Deux.

Recent works for theatre include a series of Samuel Beckett plays with the company Gare St. Lazare including First Love, The End, The Trilogy and the musical piece Here All Night.

Academic

From Manchester and has trained in Music at Salford University, Lighting and Design at RADA and the Yale School of Drama, in Architecture at University of North London and gained a MMus in Music Composition from the University of Surrey.
